Cocker Spaniel Training

First off let’s begin by establishing the fact that crate training is not a cruel process. You are not using the crate to punish your dog; it is also not hurting them to have to be in the crate. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s go over the basics.

Crate Training Cocker Spaniel

A crate is a wonderful tool to use for housebreaking, your Cocker Spaniel. The Cocker Spaniel is a lot the Golden Retriever when it comes to house breaking, they are an outside dog, and it is in their nature not to understand the bathroom limitations. The crate will help them to understand the rules better. The crate is also a great way to keep your puppy save when you are not around.
If you are using the crate to help in the housebreaking process, you do not want it to be too big. If the crate is big the dog will designate a corner of it, the bathroom, this completely defeats the purpose. Your dog only needs enough room to stand up, turn around, and lay back down. As soon as you let the puppy out of its crate immediately carry them to the bathroom area outside. Soon they will catch on to the process.
Keep the crate in a room that your family spends a great deal of time in. At night time take the crate into your bedroom so that the puppy does not feel alone. Never take your puppy out for crying, they will think that if they cry more the next time they will get out of the crate just like before.
