Due to the popularity of this breed, there were a lot of breeders that were less than honorable. They bred their dogs in mass litters, and did not pay a close enough attention to the pedigree; this resulted in a lot of inbreeding, and even more health issues. While there are notable breeders in charge today and the puppy mill breeding for the Cocker Spaniel has stopped, most of the puppies born are still at risk of the health issues that plagued the past generations.

Eye Infections and ear infections are two of the less serious health problems that go along with the breed. While these two issues do not start out life altering, if the conditions are left unattended your pet could lose their vision or their hearing. A clean dog that is well groomed, and well taken care of has less of a risk for these two problems. Skin problems are also a typical issue among the breed. Skin problems are harder to treat because it is not easy to pinpoint what is causing the problem.
Autoimmune diseases run high among the Cocker Spaniel breed. These diseases that tend to show up more in this breed than others and they can be fatal. So fatal that death can occur in as little as three days. You have to pay close attention to this breed in the health department. While a lot of the problems are not serious there are still the problems that can take your dog’s life. Make sure that your dog visits their vet on a regular basis, it is these trips that save lives.
