How to stop Dog Aggression Towards People

Of the various types of aggression issue dogs may have, aggression towards people tops the list as the worst of these issues. Any time a dog begins to act out aggressively to humans, it is a warning that your dog may actually be willing to bite someone, perhaps a family member or a guest to your house.

You will need to correct your dogs behavior if you see it displaying aggression towards people. Dogs usually have a reason that has caused they to become aggressive . Usually the reason for a dog’s aggression towards people is that the poor animal had been abused by someone when it was a younger animal.

If you know what to look for, the signs of aggression towards people are easy to spot. The dog will be snarling or growling while displaying his teeth. In addition, it may raise the hackles on his back, bark and even make a lunge while snapping his teeth. A dog in this state of aggression towards people could easily escalate from aggression to actual biting unless something is done to defuse the situation.

For a dog to become this aggressive towards people, it has usually arrived at the its level of aggression because of some type of negative conditioning. If you use positive conditioning techniques to regain your dog’s trust and confidence about people, you can gradually relieve your dog of his aggression problem towards people.

Before you even begin your aggression training with your dog, make sure he cannot run loose. Be sure to keep your aggressive dog inside an enclosed yard, or if you have no fence, be sure to keep him on a lead so he cannot get loose and possibly attack any passersby.

To correct your dog’s aggression towards people, use the following training advice. Start by taking your dog with you to visit a friend of your-someone who likes dogs is a good idea, so they won’t be acting timid. Meet on neutral turf, so your dog’s territorial aggression instincts are not engaged. You should already have put your dog’s leash on before you start the training. By controlling your dog via his leash, you can prevent any lunges by your dog. In case your dog does act aggressively towards your friend,  you should immediately calm him down with a firm “no” and put him back into his sit position. Remember to stay calm and not start yelling at or hitting your dog for his misbehavior. Doing that will only negatively impact your training efforts, by keeping your dog tense.

Do not give him any praise or affection or a treat until he has resumed a relaxed sitting position. Once he does so, you can then praise him and give him a treat for being a good boy. By only praising and rewarding the behaviors you want, you are using positive reinforcement to get the responses form your dog that you want to see. Every time he displays any aggression at all, you will need to repeat this step. Through the positive reinforcement your dog not gets, his aggression towards people will eventually be desensitized through repeated exposures to them.

You will want to practice stopping your dog’s aggression towards people often to really establish your dog’s new found ability to be relaxed around other people. After your dog has become relaxed with your friend, you can do the same training step using different people, until he can meet anyone without first being aggressive.

In the early days of his training just have him meet 1 new person at a time. This is due to the fact that a larger crowd of people could easily be overwhelming for the dog, and make it impossible for him to relax. Once your dog has shown he can remain calm when meeting a variety of new people one on one, you may increase the amount of people around during the training. Of course, you want him to be comfortable around groups of people in every social situation, so he can be part of the family.

If you use these steps your dog’s aggression towards people will be corrected, and he will finally be around people without feeling like someone may abuse him. If you have successfully corrected his aggression problems towards people, you will finally have a dog that is safe and fun for your family and friends to be around.  Now that your dog has mellowed out, you can even take him out in public for a good time without traumatizing him and him traumatizing the people he encounters.
